To showcase the charm of Kanazawa's Geigi, a variety of videos were produced.
The Geigi of the ancient capital, Kanazawa, symbolize its elegant culture. Their graceful dances and refined manners continue to captivate people. This project portrays the Geigi living in the present while carrying forward tradition, offering a look from various angles. Through vivid footage, it reveals the previously unseen world of Geigi—from the magnificent behind-the-scenes of their performances and daily training to their interactions with customers—widely spreading the charm of Kanazawa’s culture.
〜Flowers bloom, and leaves sprout〜
An intimate look into the pride and passion of the geigi who carry on tradition in Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya District. It portrays their finely polished artistry, their mission to preserve cultural traditions, and their resolve to pass them on to the next generation. Closely following the daily life of a veteran geigi proprietress, the film beautifully depicts the way of life of a woman living within tradition.
The Practitioners of Kanazawa's Traditional Performing Arts – Geigi
his project introduces the charm and skills of the Geigi from the three chaya districts in Kanazawa. In addition to showcasing their craft, the project also features interviews with the Geigi themselves, discussing their journey and what led them to pursue the Geigi profession.
Higashi Chaya District Geigi: "Sawagi"
This video was produced to capture the transformation of an ordinary person into a Geigi, illustrating their daily life and their journey to become a practitioner of the arts.
Nishi Chaya District Geigi: "The Path to Becoming a Geigi"
A drama-style video was produced to give viewers an immersive understanding of the path to becoming a Geigi.
Kazue-machi Chaya District Geigi: "The Beauty and Charm of a Geigi"
Through a portrayal of the teahouse environment, this video introduces the allure and beauty of Geigi.
